Plot[edit]

In 1988, Katie and Kristi watch as Dennis' spine is crushed by a mysterious force.[N 1] Grandma Lois takes the girls upstairs while the entity takes the camera with them. A man speaks to the girls about 'Tobi' and how they are important to his plan.

Twenty-five years later in 2013, Ryan Fleege, his wife Emily, and their six-year-old daughter Leila are about to celebrate Christmas, when Ryan's brother Mike moves in after breaking up with his girlfriend. Along with them is Skylar, who notices that Leila is talking to an imaginary friend named Tobi. Mike finds a box of old video tapes, dating from 1988 to 1992. The tapes show a young Kristi and Katie with their mother Julie and her boyfriend Dennis in 1988,[N 1] while others from 1992 are in Lois's house where the two are practicing supernatural abilities with the mysterious man. Ryan and Mike notice that the girls are seemingly aware of the two's presence: they are able to foresee Ryan and Mike's every action as the pair simultaneously watch the video.

Leila's interactions with Tobi coincide with Ryan using the old camera around the house, where he notices the camera picks up spiritual beings. He decides to record overnight to see what weird things are occurring. One night, a black figure arises out of the ground and hovers over Leila for several hours, and she eventually talks to it. Soon, Skylar is attacked by the spirit. The next night, Ryan tapes Leila sleeping, but a demonic spirit appears and forces him to drop the camera. The following day, Ryan and Emily discover a slab of concrete in the ground with Katie, Kristi and the year 1987 etched into it, and realize their house is built on the same property that Katie and Kristi used to live in before it burned down in 1992. The grown-up Katie sold the house to the family, which was built by a coven of witches called The Midwives.

Leila gradually becomes less talkative and Ryan and Emily call Father Todd. Leila attacks Todd and he is convinced that 'Tobi' is a demon linked to the cult. Ryan researches the cult, and realizes they killed a family in Nevada[N 2] related to a boy named Hunter,[N 3] who was born on the same day as Leila. One of the tapes also shows Hunter in 1992,[N 4] despite not being born until 2005. He learns that Leila's blood is needed to finish Tobi's transformation into a physical being. One night, Leila's interaction with Tobi leads her to open a doorway to another world into which she disappears. Ryan and Emily find her and flee with her to a hotel.

Father Todd attempts to cleanse the house and trap the demon but is strangled and dragged away by Tobi, leaving the family to finish the cleansing. Ryan entraps the demon in a white sheet soaked in holy water and finishes the prayer. Leila returns to normal and the demon disappears. After thinking the ordeal is over, Skylar starts to vomit blood all over Mike, but the blood burns him, killing them both. Leila flees, and Ryan and Emily chase her but Ryan is killed when a large arm impales him through his chest. Leila sprints into the 'portal' in her room with Emily following; she arrives at Kristi and Katie's mother's house in 1992, where she finds a young Katie, and confronts the 'human' version of Tobi. Emily pleads with the demon to spare Leila, but is killed, her body is tossed at the camera. Leila and 'Tobi' walk off as the camera cuts, ending the film.

Alternate ending[edit]

Leila turns back to normal. Four months later, the family begins to move to another house. Ryan finds a VHS tape of young Katie and Kristi, but decides to destroy the evidence to avoid bringing the demon back. Emily turns to find Leila with younger Katie and Kristi holding hands as she states: 'Look, mommy, my friends are here!' The next scene, set some time later, shows a pregnant Emily at Leila's birthday party; Leila wishes for a baby brother, being Robbie from Paranormal Activity 4. The man from the videos appears and picks up Leila as everyone celebrates. The film ends.

Industrial Light & Magic created the 3D visual effects, especially for the creation of the Toby demon.

Marketing[edit]

A teaser trailer was released on June 22,[7] and promotional stills were released afterwards.[8] The official first trailer was released the following day at midnight.[9][10]

Release[edit]

The film was originally slated for October 25, 2013,[11] and was then delayed to October 2014.[12] On September 17, 2014, it was announced that the film would be subtitled The Ghost Dimension, and that it was set to be released on March 13, 2015.[13] On January 27, 2015, Paramount Pictures announced that it had pushed the release date back to October 23, 2015.[14] The film was released in 3D and RealD 3D.[15]

In July, Paramount announced that it had struck a deal with AMC Entertainment and Cineplex Entertainment to make Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse and Ghost Dimension available digitally, 17 days after they drop below 300 theaters, as part of a larger experiment, and asked other theaters to join in. In return, Paramount will share an undisclosed portion of proceeds of the VOD revenues.[16] Per industry sources, Paramount is giving participating exhibitors an estimated 2-4% share of their digital revenue made between the time the film drops below 300 theaters and 90 days after its opening date.[17] Those agreeing to Paramount's formula includes AMC, Canada's Cineplex, National Amusements and Alamo Drafthouse. But many circuits including Regal Cinema, Cinemark and Carmike have rejected Paramount's offer to release in VOD.[16][17] This would mean that Ghost Dimension will only go out in roughly 1,350 North American theaters when opening on October 23—compared to 2,883 theaters for the last title and well north of 3,000 theaters for each of the previous three films.[16] According to early pre-release tracking, the film was pacing to open to $10–12 million in the United States and Canada—despite the fact the film had the added benefit of 3D pricing, a first for the series—compared to $18.3 million for Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.[16] The reason why Paramount carried out this approach and experimented with these two younger demographic genre movies—which many believe to be a box office failure—was because of the theatrical failure of MGM's Hot Tub Time Machine 2.[17] Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount Pictures said, 'There is no question that we are going to do less theatrically, but I believe we will make it up digitally. This is about the long-term health of the business, so there is not this long period of time when a consumer can't watch a movie.'[16]

International[edit]

The film was released in the United Kingdom and Ireland on October 21, 2015.[18]

Reception[edit]

Box office[edit]

As of November 15, 2015, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension has grossed $18.3 million in North America and $60.6 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $78.9 million, against a budget of $10 million, making it the poorest performing film in the series.[4]

The film opened on October 23, 2015, alongside The Last Witch Hunter, Rock the Kasbah, and Jem and the Holograms, as well as the expanded release of Steve Jobs. In its opening weekend, the film had projected to gross $10–12 million from 1,656 theaters, however, some projections had it earning only in the high-single digits. The film made $500,000 from its early Thursday screenings and $3.3 million on its first day. In its opening weekend, the film grossed $8.1 million, finishing sixth at the box office.[19]

Critical response[edit]

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 15% based on 75 reviews; the average rating is 3.6/10. The website's critical consensus reads, 'Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension ties up some of the franchise's lingering questions, but six films into the series, the thrills are mostly gone.'[20] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 30 out of 100 based on 13 critics, indicating 'generally unfavorable reviews'.[21] On CinemaScore, audiences gave the film an average grade of 'C' on an A+ to F scale.[19]

Sequel[edit]

On June 19, 2019, Paramount announced that a seventh installment is in development.[22] In November 2019, it was announced that the film is set to be released on March 19, 2021.[23]

Watch Paranormal Activity The Marked Ones Online This past year was
noticeably light on the paranormal activity. Instead of receiving our
annual dose of ghostly shenanigans around Halloween, Paramount opted to
skip a year and deliver a double shot of “Paranormal Activity” in 2014.
First up is “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” which comes out this
January. Has the year away made the heart grow fonder or is Paramount in
danger of diluting their stock?
“Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” was originally billed as a
Hispanic-centric side story. However, while this may not be a direct
sequel, it still plays a very important role in the “Paranormal
Activity” franchise. It not only expands the narrative universe of the
series, but it also offers some shocking revelations. The film centers
on a teenager named Jesse (Andrew Jacobs) and his best friend Hector
(Jorge Diaz) right as they’re graduating from high school.
Watch Paranormal Activity The Marked Ones Online Jesse is pretty much
the “everyteen” in that he is a completely average teenager who has
aspirations for greater things, but still enjoys being an idiot. Hector
fulfills this need as Jesse’s goofball friend who provides most of the
comedic relief of the film.
Maybe it’s because this film has a Hispanic atmosphere that is very
familiar to me, but Jesse is one of the more relatable characters in the
Paranormal series. He’s an average guy with a goofy best friend who
just wants to get out of the rough neighborhood he grew up in. We spend
enough time with him, his family, and his friends to get a sense of who
he is and why he’s loved by those around him. It’s enough to make him
tangible, but maybe not enough to make him fully three dimensional.
Watch Paranormal Activity The Marked Ones Online And even though Hector
is the film’s “comedic relief”, he doesn’t come off as obnoxious or
annoying; he’s very much a believable character. He seemingly has no
greater aspiration in life than to be a good friend and, for that
reason, he’s easy to like. Both Jesse and Hector are approachable
characters, without any real complexity to them.
The conflict in the film arises when Jesse and Hector witness a fellow
high schooler named Oscar (Carlos Pratts aka Gus from “The Bridge”)
leaving the apartment of a woman many believe to be a witch. Of course,
this prompts the two to dig a little deeper and Jesse soon discovers
that he and Oscar share a connection to a familiar coven of witches who
have chosen them to be “marked ones.”
Watch Paranormal Activity The Marked Ones Online This is where “The
Marked Ones” diverges from previous “Paranormal Activity” entries.
Instead of creating a feeling of doom and gloom, the film initially
builds up a sense of mystique and wonder surrounding Jesse’s marked
status. We soon learn that being marked comes with some supernatural
advantages. A spirit now watches over Jesse who allows him to be
stronger, faster, and impervious to damage. It all seems like a gift,
but things inevitably turn sour and an ominous atmosphere soon sinks in.
In a lot of ways, this film felt like it was blending themes from “The
Wolfman” with elements from “Chronicle” and placing them in the context
of the “Paranormal Activity” universe. Initially having the powers is
fun and leads to a lot of humorous moments in the first half of the
film. However, Jesse soon begins to fear the growing beast inside of him
and worries that it might hurt him or someone he loves. Jesse almost
appears to be a Talbot type character that is frightened by what he is,
but is unable to stop himself.
Watch Paranormal Activity The Marked Ones Online Previous entries in the
series tended to focus on the relationship between family members or
couples. “The Marked Ones” takes a unique approach as it places the
familial aspects in the background and places the bond between friends
at the forefront. The change creates a substantial shift in tone for the
film that adds a bit of freshness to it.
This is still a “Paranormal Activity” film and, as such, it all builds
to a horrific climatic ending. That being said, “The Marked Ones”
features one of the craziest endings I’ve seen in a while. It’s so out
there that people are either going to absolutely love it or hate it. I’m
not even going to hint at how this whole thing wraps up, but once the
film starts winding down it builds and builds until it finally erupts
and delivers some rather insane revelations.
Watch Paranormal Activity The Marked Ones Online At the end of the day, I
know that this series can be extremely divisive in the horror
community. If you’ve hated all of the previous Paranormal Activity
films, then there’s nothing I can say that would convince you to see
this one. However, if you’ve been a fan of the series since the
beginning then I have no problem saying that this is one of the best
“Paranormal Activity” films yet. The scares are a bit formulaic and not
as creative as previous entries, but the overall package has reignited
my love for a series that I was ready to write off after the fourth
installment.
